Atlas Heavy Transport was selected to rig and transport the BOP module from Houston to Baytown TX. The total transport route was ~120 Miles. The move was restricted to be a night move only due to the permit regulations as a result of the overall height of the transport and took 2 nights to complete.
The challenging part was the concentration of weight on such a small footprint and the dimensions of the BOP.
Due to the height, the BOP had to be laid down to allow for clearances along the route. The loading facility only had 1 overhead crane which could lift the BOP so a custom trailing frame was designed which allowed the BOP to be handled with the one crane. Atlas Heavy fabricated the trailing frame in house to the specs provided to ensure the load could be complete as envisaged.
The trailing frame was designed for two reasons:
The transport was executed flawlessly with multiple wires, railroad arms, signal lights being raised just before the payload passed and low bridges passed under cleared with perfection. It is a great example of pre planning done right and how at Atlas Heavy we are Engineered to move.
